The American Red Cross was established in Washington D.C by Clara Barton and a circle of friends on May 21, 1881. Barton heard about the Swiss-inspired international Red Cross and campaigned for a ratification of the Geneva Convention protecting the war-injured, it was ratified in 1882. Today the American Red Cross, affiliate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has more than 700 chapters nationwide in 9 divisions.
